Civil Aviation Airport Production Statistics Bulletin of 2017

1. Navigable City and Airports

In 2017, there were 229 civil aviation airports (certified) in China (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, similarly hereinafter), 228 of which have scheduled flights and 224 navigable cities have scheduled flights.

The new navigable cities that are planned to have scheduled flights during the year include Lancang in Yunnan, Shache in Xinjiang, Holingol in Inner Mongolia, Songyuan in Jilin, Baicheng in Jilin, Shangrao in Jiangxi, Chengde in Hebei, Shaoyang in Hunan, Wudalianchi in Heilongjiang and Jiansanjiang in Heilongjiang. Shaanxi Ankang Airport continued to be suspended.

2. Main Production Indicators

In 2017, the major production indicators of China’s airports continued to maintain a steady and rapid growth. The annual passenger throughput exceeded 1.1 billion passengers and has reached 1147.867 million and an increase of 12.9% has been seen over the previous year. In terms of sub-routes, the number of passengers of domestic routes reached 1036.146 million and an increase of 13.4% over the previous year (including 27.10 million passengers from the Mainland to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, a decrease of 1.9% over the previous year); the number of passengers of international routes reached 111.721 million, an increase of 9.2% over the previous year.

The throughput of cargo and mail was 16.717 million tons, an increase of 7.1% over the previous year. In terms of sub-routes, 10.001 million tons have been made by domestic routes, an increase of 2.7% over the previous year (including 990,000 tons of routes from the Mainland to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, an increase of 5.8% over the previous year); and 6.177 million tons of international routes were made with annual growth rate to be 15.2%.

A total of 10.249 million take-offs and landings were completed, representing an increase of 10.9% over the previous year (including 8.729 million aircrafts for transportation, an increase of 10.0% over the previous year). In terms of sub-routes, 9.38 million flights were completed from domestic routes, an increase of 11.3% over the previous year (including 192,000 routes from the Mainland to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, representing a decrease of 5.4% over the previous year); and 869,000 flights from international routes were completed with a growth rate of 7.3%.

3. Passenger Throughput Distribution

The number of airports with annual passenger throughput of more than 10 million passengers reached 32, a net increase of 4 over the previous year (Wusu in Taiyuan, Longjia in Changchun, Changbei in Nanchang, Hohhot Baita Airport) and 81.0% of the domestic airport passenger throughput was completed by the 32 airports representing an increase of 1.9 percent over the previous year, of which airports in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou accounted for 24.3% of all domestic airport passengers throughput, a decrease of 1.9 percent over the previous year. There were 26 airports of which the annual passenger throughput reached between 2 million and 10 million, a net increase of 5 over the previous year. The passenger throughput was 11.8% of the passenger throughput of all domestic airports, a decrease of 1.0 percent over the previous year. There were 171 airports with annual passenger throughput of less than 2 million, a net increase of 2 over the previous year. The passenger throughput was 7.3% of total domestic airport passenger throughput, a decrease of 0.8 percent over the previous year.

The distribution of passenger throughput in various regions in China is 15.0% (15.3%) in North China, 6.3% (6.1%) in Northeast China, 29.0% (29.0%) in East China, 24.2% (23.8%) in Central and South China, 16.5% (16.9%) in Southwest China, 6.4% (6.2%) in Northwest China and 2.6% (2.7%) in Xinjiang. (Note: Due to rounding, the sum of the proportions of the regions may not be 100%. The figures in parentheses are 2016’s figures, similarly hereinafter.)

4. Cargo and Mail Throughput Distribution

Among the airports, 52 airports had annual cargo and mail throughput of over 10,000 tons, a net increase of 2 over the previous year, and cargo and mail throughput accounted for 98.5% of total domestic airport cargo and mail throughput, which is a 0.2 percent increase over the previous year. Among them, the airports of Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou accounted for 49.9% of all domestic airports' cargo and mail throughputs, an increase of 0.3% over the previous year. There were 177 airports with annual cargo and mail throughput below 10,000 tons, a net increase of 9 over the previous year. and the completion of cargo and postal throughput accounted for 1.5% of total domestic airport cargo and mail throughput, which was a decrease of 0.2 percent from the previous year.

The distribution of cargo and mail throughput in China is 15.4% (15.8%) in North China, 3.4% (3.5%) in Northeast China, 41.2% (40.4%) in East China, 26.2% (26.4%) in Central and South China, 10.1% (10.2%) in Southwest China, 2.5% (2.4%) in Northwest China and 1.2% (1.2%) in Xinjiang.
